Blewitt Springs Grenache 2022
Mclaren Vale
Most wax poetically about the ‘Pinosity’ of Grenache. Rarely do wines deliver, but Louis simply nails this one in the light, crunchy expression of Grenache. It comes from Blewitt springs, between McLaren Flat and Clarendon, in the middle of the rolling hills of McLaren Vale. This area is home to a diverse array of soil types, but is most famous for its ancient sand dunes where Grenache with vine age makes stunningly perfumed, pretty and intriguing wine.
Vineyard
Endersby Vineyard and Brini Vineyard – Blewitt Springs, Ancient sand dune with 60-80 year old vines
Winemaking
The fruit was hand-harvested and fermented almost entirely whole-bunch in small, open-top plastic fermenters. Spontaneous fermentation, and after about 5-6 days Louis did a bit of manual hand plunging to break up the berries. After a period ranging from 10-30 days, the lots were pressed to old French 500L barrels for maturation. The wine aged on the gross lees for eight months without any lees stirring and was then racked to tank to settle naturally.
Vintage
Mild conditions of warm days, cool nights, minimal rain and no heat spikes, producing vibrant wines of supple tannins and bright natural acidity.
Tasting Note
Alluring, pinot-like aromas of fresh red flowers, cardamom dusted-red berries, touches of green peppercorns, and blood orange. The texture is fine with lace-like tannins and high-toned acidity that guides toward a penetrating and memorable finish.
